Water for Elephants.

I really did not expect to love this book.  In fact, I put off reading it for over a year after a friend recommended it to me because, let me be very clear-- I. HATE. THE. CIRCUS.  I went a few times as a kid, but I have never been a big animal person.  So, the circus was not fun for me.  Which was why I didn't think a book about the circus would really appeal to me.  But, I finally broke down and read it, and oh was I glad I did.

The story started off about Jacob Jankowski, a 90+ year old man in a nursing home who, as it turns out, worked on the circus when he was young.  Through flashbacks, we learn about his how he came to join the circus and his early days on the Benzini Brothers Most Spectacular Show on Earth as the resident veterinarian.

There are some violent scenes, especially with the animals, and the romance wasn't developed as much as it just occured.

But even with these minor flaws, I loved the story and the writing was great.

Final Grade = A-
