Weekend Recap!

So Friday night, I went shopping with Sarah and Em for Sarah's BD bash!  And I finally watched Inception.

I really don't even know how to describe Inception.  I liked it, but was soooo confused in the beginning.  Things became slightly clearer, and it got kind of cool.  But somehow I never got really into it.  I was kind of disappointed, given that I love Chris Nolan (Memento and The Prestige were AMAZING movies, not to mention The Dark Knight).  I'd definitely put Inception ahead of the Black Swan, though.

Then Saturday, we all went out for Sarah's big 2-7 birthday!  We danced the night away, I paid $2 per bottle of water, and I finally went to sleep at the beginning of the Australian Open final match (aka around 3:45am).  Pictures to come once I can steal get them off of someone else's camera/facebook.

Sunday rolled around WAY too fast, but I wasn't complaining because it was GORGEOUS here!  After a week of 30s and 40s, Sunday made it to 65 degrees and sunny!  It was pretty sweet, and I got to watch one of my faves, Novak Djokovic, win the Australian Open!

Novak Djokovic celebrates after beating Andy Murray in the Australian Open men's singles final Sunday in Melbourne.

I spent the rest of the day hanging out with the family, catching up on reading blogs, trying to plan meals for the week, and watching the SAG Awards.  Sooooo glad that SAG recognized Modern Family, which is THE funniest show on television!

And now Monday is here.  Happy Bachelor Day, everyone!

Happy Birthday, Sarah!

Tomorrow is the birthday of my lovely friend, Sarah!  We're heading out tonight to celebrate her big day.  Woo hoo!  In honor of the day of her birth, here are the top six things I love about Sarah:

1.  She'll lick an ice cream cone out of someone else's hand.

2.  She has a big heart.

3. And a pretty hot boyfriend.

4. She wears gifts I give her for Christmas (the scarf).

5. She loves dinosaurs.

6: She's a great friend and tons of fun to be around.  :)
Happy birthday, Sarah!!!

Happy Friday.

Last night, I went with my friend Amanda to see Black Swan.

It was seriously the most creepy movie I've ever seen.  I thought I had it figured out, but I didn't.  And, I typically love movies like that, but I was not a big fan of this one.  Oh well.  Two down, eight more to go on my Oscar movie list.  I hope to watch Inception tonight, so I'll be well on my way to getting all these movies watched!

Since it's Friday, you all know what that means!

1. If you had $1,000 to donate to a charity, which would you choose?
Wow, there are so many to choose from, but I would likely give it to my church's mission fund.  I'm so blessed to be at a church that has such a heart for missions (both here and abroad).

2. Snow days: Do you welcome them happily or are they a pain in your butt?
If there is enough snow that it gets me out of work, I welcome them.  But, if the courthouse and my firm are open, then it's just a pain.

3. What talent did you wish you had and why?
I wish I was more artistic.  I can't draw, paint, or craft anything to look very pretty but would love to be able to.

4. Are you a news, politics or celebrity gossip junkie?
I really cannot stand watching cable news.  I really believe sometimes that 24 hour news channels perpetuate the problems in this country.  There's simply not enough to talk about for 24 hours without becoming ridiculous.

Politics used to be my obsession in college, and I still care greatly.  But, I wouldn't call myself a junkie anymore.  And, I'm certainly not a celebrity gossip junkie, although I do enjoy keeping track of some celebrities that I like (or dislike).

5. What is your favorite "cocktail"?
I'm definitely a Cosmo girl or other fruity martinis.  My absolute favorite is the Double Black Diamond from Firebird's Grill.  Tequila makes me want to vomit, so no margaritas for me.

Hope y'all have an awesome weekend!!

A Lofty Goal.

As you all probably know, the Oscar nominations were released yesterday.  And, I was horrified surprised at some of the pretty serious omissions, including:
  • No Chris Nolan for Director of Inception, although he did get a Best Original Screenplay and Best Picture.
  • No Andrew Garfield for Best Supporting Actor in The Social Network. Given my love for Andrew (as you can read here and even a little bit here), I am seriously unhappy about this one.
  • No Mila Kunis for Best Supporting Acress in Black Swan.
  • And no love at all for The Town, except a Supporting Actor for Jeremy Renner.  Not even a Best Screenplay for Ben Affleck.
But, despite these slaps in the face, I'm going to try to watch all of the films nominated for Best Picture (with one caveat below) before the Oscars on February 27.  Thank you, Netflix for having all the movies that are not currently in theaters!

Black Swan

The Fighter

The Kids Are All Right

The King's Speech

The Town
(I'm substituting this for 127 Hours because I cannot handle that movie.)

The Social Network
(This is the only one I've already seen)

Toy Story 3

True Grit

Winter's Bone
(The only one on the list I've never even heard of.)

Anybody with me?  :)

There's No Crying on The Bachelor.

Or, at least there shouldn't be.  Seriously "ladies," you're crying over Stephen Bradley Pickelsimer, hardened criminal extraordinaire. (Pause: Can't really blame the guy for changing his last name from Pickelsimer to Womack.)

Our delight begins when Crazy Eyes awakens with a mysterious black eye!  Have the other women finally gotten tired of her crap?  No one fesses up to it, so she's going with "it's stress."  Compounded with the fact that she "wakes up with heartburn" and "doesn't sleep," Crazy Eyes is having some emotional trouble dealing with the fact that Brad is dating Chantal anyone else.  Crying event #1.

Brad comes to pick up Chantal the Slapper for their one on one date, but is first bombarded with an "I woke up with a black eye" plea for attention from Crazy Eyes. Quick on his feet, Brad says, "Uh, you ok?"  Crazy Eyes tries to milk it, but is stymied by.... a helicopter!  Usually a staple of Bachelor dates, this is our first whirlybird of the season (don't worry, it won't be the last of the night).

Brad and Slap Happy are whisked away to the lovely Catalina Island to torture Chantal "walk on the ocean floor."  Slap Happy is not excited due to her fear of going to the bottom and never coming back up.  (Isn't there a TWSS in there somewhere?)  But, she "conquers her fear" and they have a lovely stroll through seaweed.  Cut to them arriving at an oceanside cabana picnic.  Slappy is "falling for" Brad, having had one and a half dates over three weeks with him.  They gaze into each others eyes with the romantic words "I like you a lot." Slappy gets the rose.

Group date time!  Don't get too excited-- there were no extra video cameras this week.  Brad takes the "ladies" to Loveline so that Dr. Drew can pry into their lives chat with them on the radio. "I'm hoping to create an environment where these women can open up to me."  Because nothing encourages honesty and openness like being surrounded by a dozen other women dating the same guy and being live on the radio.

Brad allegedly has never cheated on a woman, but poor Stacey the bartender has.  But it was in college and she was drunk, so it didn't count.  I mean, she shouldn't have even been in a relationship then, according to Dr. Drew.  After seeing the look on Brad's face at this confession, no one else owns up to cheating.  After the radio confessional, Brad and the "ladies" go swimming.  Of course.  (Seriously, is there NEVER a date that doesn't involve water and semi-nakedness??)  During this group swim, Alli starts crying because Ashley the Nanny interrupts her time with Brad all while sweetly apologizing and asking for a hug.  Really?  I'm not going to hug the woman who's stealing away my bf.  (Crying event #2)

Then, Ashley the Dentist tries to be coy and manipulating.  But Brad's been in therapy, so this backfires.  Big time.  She sees him kiss Britt (who I'm told has been on this show since the beginning) and has a hissy fit.  Ashley whines to Brad about how "hard this is" to hear about other dates.  Being the sensitive guy he is, Brad suggests that it is it fun and exciting.  "Yeah, for you," replies Ashley (who really says what we were all thinking, but should not say out loud).  This pisses Brad off big time.  So much so that he totally calls her out in front of all the other girls in the hot tub.  Looooong awkward moment with all the "ladies" until Brad ushers Britt away and basically throws the rose at her.  Poor Britt doesn't even realize what's happening, but laps up the rose excitedly.

Back at the house during the group date, Crazy Eyes finally gets her golden ticket!  Slappy observes that all the other date cards have said something about "love" but CE's only says "let's hang out together."  But, "it's probably nothing."  Crazy Eyes freaks, wondering what this means for her.  Nicely done, Slappy.

The next day, Brad comes to pick up Crazy Eyes, but first has to deal with Ashley.  They have a heart to heart about her first date curse and that he still wants her around, blah blah blah.  Michelle is inside SEETHING because Ashley is ruining her one on one.  Brad finally comes back to Crazy Eyes, saying "It's your big day!"  (aka-- Today is the day I deem you worthy enough to be with me. You're welcome.)  They drive to Brad's "house" for another helicopter pickup!!  This time, their destination is the top of a building.  Yes, much to Crazy's dismay (quasi Crying event #3), they are on top of a building and have to get down via rope.

SIDE BAR: This has really pissed me off about the producers this season-- apparently they have asked all the women what their biggest fear is and planned special dates for them to do just that.  There was Emily on the small plane, Chantal and the water, now Michelle and heights.  Next week they are going to make Emily get in a race car.  Come on, producers, this is ridiculous.  END SIDE BAR.

Crazy Eyes "conquers her fear" and rappels down the building with Brad.  "None of the other girls back home can even compare with what I've been able to share with him.  Boom!"  Oh, hello Ghetto Crazy Eyes.  The rest of their date is in a pool (duh) and is uneventful, so Brad gives her the rose.

Brad's "therapist" comes back and basically tells Brad that whatever he says is right and to keep doing what he's doing.  Nice work, doc. And, we move on to the cocktail party...

"Brad" created a nice little picnic for Emily since she didn't get a date this week, and this sends the rest of the women into a mega-tizzy.  (Crying event #4)  Chantal totally loses it, and Brad consoles her with these words, "I'm so wildly attracted to the fact that you're everything that I have not been with in my past."  Um, thanks?

Brad sends home Stacey the bartender (clearly he did not appreciate her openness and honesty about cheating in college), Meghan, and Lindsay.  None of whom I knew before this episode.

What did you guys think?

Optimism Monday.

It's Monday, so I could be bummed that I have to spend five more days at work before the epic weekend ahead.  But, I choose to focus on the positive.  :)  For instance...
  • The Steelers beat the Jets last night to go to the Super Bowl.
  • JJ Redick is featured on the Dante & Galante show tonight.  (6pm on Sun Sports)
  • I have DirecTV, so I can get SunSports (a Florida channel, if you couldn't tell) here in North Carolina to see JJ on tv tonight.
  • My (unexpected) car repairs are only $250, instead of the $500-$600 guess my colleague made.
  • I have a gift certificate for 8 free weeks of Tae Kwon Do, and I'm gonna start this week
  • The Daytona 500 is less than four weeks away!  Here's hoping Jamie McMurray can make it back to back wins!
  • Season 3 DVDs of Dawson's Creek will be arriving this afternoon from Netflix.
  • Today, I get a break from having to go to court, even though I'll be there the rest of the week.
  • Oh, and of course tonight is Bachelor night!!  (Follow me on twitter @katielaw7 to chat about Brad and his crazies during the show!)

Hallelujah, the Weekend is Almost Here!

Happy Friday, everyone!  It's been a jam-packed week for me, and today will be no exception.  So, I am definitely looking forward to a little R&R this weekend!

1. Where did you meet your spouse and did you instantly know it was love?
Technically, we haven't met yet.  BUT the moment we meet will be magical, and he'll know instantly that it's love  (I, of course, already know.)
Hello, Handsome.  :)

2. What is your favorite room in your house?
My living room.  It's where my big TV is and my comfy sectional sofa-- perfect for reading, napping, watching TV.  I love hanging out in there.

3. Can you wiggle your ears?
I can wiggle my left ear.  Weird, right?

4. What is your evening ritual?
I try to head to my bedroom to get ready around 10.  I wash my face, apply all my skincare products, brush my teeth, pee (tmi?), and hop in the bed.  Then, I have my quiet time and finally, I watch TV or read a book until I fall asleep.

5. How many hours of sleep do you need to function?
A full eight. Sometimes I can manage on seven, but less than that, and I'm really struggling the next day.

Hope y'all have a great weekend!

Normals vs. Crazies

The night began with an appropriate line from Chantal, apparently one of our wiser bachelorettes stating, "There are Normals and there are Crazies in this house."  Got that right.  It was a sad night--we lost Fangs.  :(  Who actually turned out to be a closet Normal, then got weird again.  More about her later.

The lucky bachelorette to get the first one-on-one date of the week-- southern sweetie, Ashley!  They went to a recording studio where Brad and Ashley tortured a sound engineer recorded a cover of Seal's "Kiss From a Rose."  Then, like magic, we find out that this was a special song between Ashley and her deceased father.  It's almost like someone knew about the connection and planned it just for her!

I actually like Ashley-- she actually seems rather mature (notwithstanding all the crying) and put together.  She's (so far) a Normal.

Then group date time.  They went to film an action movie, which makes this the second week in a row where Brad has "arranged" a date requiring girls to be in front of a camera.  Anyone else think this is bizarre?  Shawntel (a Normal) clearly won the day-- she was knocking down dudes left and right.  And she got the rose because Brad likes a woman who could beat him up.

I'm only going to address Michelle (do I really need to say that she's a Crazy?) briefly because realistically, I could go on for days about her and her issues.  But, this chick is not living in reality.  She first gets pissed because she didn't get the one on one.  Later, she tells Brad that they are "in a fight" because he kissed another girl and she doesn't want him to pursue anyone but her.  Um, this is the Bachelor-- he's gonna date other women.  That's kind of the premise.  End of Michelle.

And our last date of the week was with poor, sweet Holly Madison Emily (a Normal? jury's still out considering her MAJOR emotional baggage) with her sad story.  This is probably heartless, but I found it ironic that she said "I don't talk about this much," yet I had heard the story three times by that point.  Brad is really great about her history (really, I never doubted that he would be anything short of great).  And, she's got a kid, which seems to be a plus for Brad.  She gets the rose.  Duh.

The next day, Brad's therapist arrives.  Yes, his therapist from Texas.  Because they don't have telephones from LA to Texas??  Lots of profound things are said during this five minute therapy session.  Like "make a woman feel special" and "listen to her, and she'll open up."  Things that require a therapist for Brad to figure out.

And finally the rose ceremony night has come!  Emotions are high (duh again), and our dear Fangs is having some troubles.  After hearing Emily's sob sad story, she has apparently decided that this "process" is too much.  It was really unclear why exactly she left.  But, all you really need to know is that the fangs were FAKE!  So glad they didn't leave me hanging on whether those were her real teeth or not.

So, Madison leaves mid-rose ceremony in somewhat dramatic fashion.  Which leaves only two Crazies left without a rose (neither of which I had seen up to this point).  Kimberly believed Brad was "intimidated by me" therefore kicked her to the curb, and Sarah needs some waterproof mascara.  Seriously-- they sell it at CVS, it's the same price, and will keep you from looking like this:

The previews for next week look amazing (as always).  Who wants to take odds that Michelle gives herself the black eye?  Anyone?

Golden Globes-- The Good, The Bad, and the Ridiculous.

I wasn't glued to the Golden Globes for much of the program because I was watching my Tar Heels suffer a pretty brutal beat down.  But, I did catch glimpses here and there plus the important awards at the end.

The Good:

Jim Parsons-- he's superb as the very eccentric Sheldon Cooper.  So glad for him.
Jim Parsons kissing his award during The Golden Globes

The Social Network-- Best Director for David Finchum, Best Screenplay for Aaron Sorkin (arguably the best screen writer ever), Best Original Score, and of course Best Picture- Drama.  I was thrilled for them.  This was my absolute favorite movie of 2010.

It also began my slight obsession with Andrew Garfield.
(cue gratuitous Andrew pic as Spiderman.)

The Bad:

Ricky Gervais-- The host is supposed to be light-hearted and funny.  Yes, they poke fun at the movies and stars, but Ricky had a bit of an edge last night to the point of being really awkward at times.  He was even booed at points.  Guess he won't be hosting next year...  They should get Neil Patrick Harris-- he was hilarious when he hosted the Emmys.  Or Seth Meyers who did a fantastic job with the ESPYs.

Tilda Swinton-- Truly bizarre.  And not in a good way (kinda) like Helena Bonham Carter.  What is with this?
(ps-- I'm sort of liking HBC's different colored shoes.)

The Ridiculous:

The GLEE Love-fest

Don't get me wrong.  I watch Glee.  And I typically enjoy it.  But there is way too much hype about this show.  Almost to the point of making me dislike it for that reason alone.  But, I ignore that rebellious side of me and watch the show.  The music is great, granted.  But the storylines are often pretty weak, and I HATE a show that preaches at me, which Glee tends to do.  So, as delightful as I usually find Glee, it doesn't even come close to the consistent hilarity of Modern Family.

Modern Family tv show photo

Modern Family is the winner at my house.

ps-- Y'all know what tonight is... Bachelor night!!  You can follow me on twitter @katielaw7 for my weekly unofficial "live-tweet" event.

101 in 1001 Update.

It's been five months since I created my 101 in 1001 list, so I figured I should check up and see how I'm doing:

24. Pay off credit cards: I am finally credit card debt-free! So exciting!! Granted, my credit card debt was not ridiculously high, but I carried a balance for the first time in my life for about five months. It was actually a good lesson for me to learn how scary it is to have that hanging over me AND how easy it was to let it get to that point. So, I SERIOUSLY cut back on my spending and am trying to be much more responsible these days.

25. Pay back parents: In the theme of debt-free living, I'm now on track to pay back my parents by this summer. Which will then mean that my only debts are my mortgage and student loans (both of which are long-term).

28. Organize all bills and financial docs: I made a HUGE dent in this last weekend by sorting through ALL my papers in the office and filing them away appropriately. I've still got a few here and there before I can officially cross it off the list, but I'm 95% done with this one.

64. Watch all movies on the AFI top 100 list (10th Anniversary Edition): When I started, I had only seen 29 of these movies, but now (thanks to my TiVo and Netflix) I'm up to 54! And, let me say that I have NO IDEA why some of these movies are some of the best movies ever... But some have been amazing.

71. Donate 1% of annual income to charity or ministry (not including regular tithe): Accomplished.

79. Host a girls night for my friends: Halloween at my place consisted of "scary" movies and food. Good times.

87. Get a massage, 90. Spend a day relaxing in bed, 93. Organize photos: All accomplished!

So, I've made some progress, but I've got lots left to do. Plans for the first half of this year include:

3. Travel to a state I’ve never visited:  Hopefully to visit Rachel in Texas!!

13. Finish decorating master bedroom and bathroom and 14. Finish decorating living room: These should both be accomplished SOON.

25. Pay back parents completely.

34. Make decisions about my practice: I need to make some career decisions sooner rather than later.

51. Run a 5k.

65. Take a class of some kind.

Whew!  It's gonna be a busy few months, but I've got some concrete direction, which always makes me happy.  :)

I Love Jesus, but I Drink a Little.

This video made my day.  I don't even care if Gladys is fake or not.  I laughed so hard, I was crying.  Enjoy!

Back to Work & Bachelor Recap.

After a glorious snow day yesterday, I'm back at the office today.  Even though the courthouse is closed, I'm here.  Not that I'm bitter or anything.

Onto the Bachelor!  Did you guys know it was Michelle's birthday?  I know you might have missed it since she only said it about a hundred times.  But at least she was humble and sweet about it being her birthday.  Oh, that's right.  She was a b***h.  More about her later.

First, it's Ashley's turn for a totally unrealistic date!  Brad "has a suprise for her."  (Side note: this is a HUGE pet peeve of mine.  The Bachelor/ettes have virtually nothing to do with planning the dates, yet they all act like they arranged these magical evenings.  And the girls/guys gush about how thoughtful they were in planning such nights.  Seriously, do you people not know how this works?)  Anyway, he takes her to a carnival that's been created just for the two of them.

I'll grant that it was a pretty awesome date.  Brad and Ashley the Bouncy Dentist hit it off pretty well.  She'll probably stick around for a while.

Then time for the make out date, I mean the PSA filming date with 15 women.  The commercial shoot has become as much of a staple to the Bachelor as helicopters.  Oh, and did I mention that it was Michelle's birthday?  She's thirty, in case you missed it the first ten times she said it.  Brad and the "ladies" shoot commercials to promote blood donation.  Because what says "please give blood" like a threesome with two semi-dressed girls and a vampire?

My favorite quote of the night was on this date.  By the time Brad has made out with at least five women, those left out are getting pretty unhappy, including our birthday girl, who has stormed off because it's not how she envisioned spending her 30th birthday.  Totally serious, Brad says, "I didn't know there was that much drama going on."  Really, dude?  You didn't think making out with those women would create drama?  Oh, well he probably hadn't yet heard that it was Michelle's birthday so he couldn't have known that he was supposed to blow of the other 14 women to spend the day with her alone.

So, the soft-core porn date ended, and segued into the "Pretty Woman" date (per our wordsmith Bachelor Brad) with Jackie, who I thought was super-sweet.  Brad got pretty freaked out when she told him that she had only had two serious relationships and didn't date anyone in college.  Oh well.  I guess Brad and I didn't have a chance.  I have no idea why this freaked him out so much.  Hmmm... maybe because she said she was "selective"?  Meaning, she's not going to fall in love with him just because he's hot and the Bachelor.  Brad apparently likes his women stupid and undiscerning.  We'll see how long a girl with a brain lasts.

The most exciting part of the evening was the rose ceremony when Raichel (the "energy suck") and Melissa got into a major cat fight (that had been cooking since the porn group date).  Melissa went and whined to Brad about Raichel and said the second-best quote of the night, "I'm sorry, I had onions on my pizza for lunch, and I feel like I'm so like embarassed about it.  Hehehehehe.  I'm sorry."  Brad is pretty gallant, listens to the crazy girl and moves on his merry way, eliminating both Raichel and Melissa.  Thank goodness he had the good sense to eliminate that drama when he saw it.

So, what did y'all think?  Were you sad like me that we didn't see more than 30 seconds of Fangs?

Oh, take a look at this recap-- I was laughing hysterically, which wasn't great considering I was at work when I read it.  :)

Snow Day and Blog Award.

This morning, I was supposed to wake up to snow.  Then, it was going to start mid-morning.  Then, they said it would be here early afternoon.  Well, after being completely disappointed about the fact that I had to come to work at all, the snow has finally arrived!!

I saw this photo on my local news page.  How cool that you can see the shapes of all the little snowflakes!!

It hasn't accumulated much here in NC yet, but it's supposed to continue overnight and through tomorrow.  Hopefully that will mean a day off for me tomorrow.  :)

Of course, if it keeps coming down in the heaps I'm seeing outside my window right now, it may be an early evening for me.  Hope the rest of my southwest and southern peeps are enjoying their winter weather!!

This weekend, Shalyn from Laugh Until Your Cheeks Hurt gave me this lovely award!  Her blog is one of my newly-discovered favorites.  Go check her out!  Thanks Shalyn!!

As required, seven random things about me...
  1. I love snow.  :)
  2. My favorite writing instruments are sharpies.  If I could I'd write with the fine-point permanent sharpies all the time.  But they bleed, so I switch to Sharpie pens.
  3. I'm currently watching Dawson's Creek from beginning to end (again. thanks, Neely), and I remember now how annoying Dawson is.  Pacey+Joey 4Ever.
  4. The one place in the world I want to go to more than any other is Paris.  I'm dying to see the Eiffel Tower, Champs Elysses, Notre Dame, the Louvre, Musee d Orsay, Arc de Triomphe, etc.
  5. I've started reading blogs through via Google Reader, but it makes it so easy to not comment.  So, I have to be extra-diligent to comment on blogs that I'm reading and not just move to the next one.
  6. I don't like cream cheese icing.  I like plain cream cheese on a bagel, cracker, pasta dish, or whatever. But it just shouldn't be blended with sugar.  I know-- it's weird.
  7. I love to dance.  I didn't used to, even in college.  It wasn't until after law school that I "learned how."  Now, it's so much fun to go out and dance with my girlfriends.
