My New Fave App.

I downloaded Instagram this weekend after hearing about it from several people.  It's marketed as a photo sharing app.  But I primarily use it for the awesome effects that it gives photos.  It's so easy to use.  Here are some of the photos I played with last weekend:

My beautiful new shoes (that the weather hasn't let me wear yet)

My girl, Maggie

Me from my BD party in February

This is one of my faves-- it's a flower at my house.  I love the coloring of this effect

My mom and Emma

And me again.

There's about 15 different effects you can use.  It's cool to see how they change different kinds of photos (portraits, animals, outdoor, etc.).  And the best part?  It's FREE!  Have any of you guys tried it?

ps-- If you haven't entered my giveaway already, what are you waiting for??  Only a few more days left!

What I'm Loving Wednesday.

Today I have declared to be "NO COMPLAINING DAY" for me.  A lot of days on my job, it's so easy to complain about things.  So, in that spirit, here are the things that are making me happy today.

I'm loving... Chris Brown's performances on DWTS last night.  I watched just to see him.  And yes, I know he's gone crazy (again) recently.  But the dude can perform!  Check it while you can:

I'm loving... that FX just renewed Justified for a third season!  If you're not watching this show, you're missing out.

I'm loving... that my Friday will be spent in Raleigh at what looks to be a pretty awesome continuing education seminar on forensic evidence.

I'm loving... that I'm finally gonna get to see The Lincoln Lawyer this weekend!  The book was amazing, and I can't wait to see the movie.

I'm loving... that in less than four weeks, I'll be here with my good friend Emily.

And I'm loving... the awesome response to my giveaway!!  Go enter here if you haven't already!

Happy "No Complaining" Wednesday to you all!!  :)

Target Samples.

I mentioned on twitter last week, that I got my Target beauty samples in the mail.  This was met with several inquiries. So, I thought I'd share my treasure with you and how I got it!

Look at this cute bag!  It's Sonia Kashuk and small enough to go in my purse.  I've been using this for the last few days, and it's great.

All the goodies inside!

Revlon's new Colorburst Lipgloss.  The sample is in "Hot Pink," which is not really my color.  But it will be good to help me decide if I even want to try a different shade.

Fekkai Shea Butter Moisturizing Shampoo & Conditioner.  I'm really looking forward to trying these.  My hair is super dry, so I'm curious how well this will moisturize.

Nivea Express Hydration, Neutrogena Naturals lip balm and Pantene Curly shampoo.

It also had $25 in beauty product coupons to be used at Target.

So, here's the deal-- The website is samples.target.com.  They don't always have samples available (right now, there's nothing that I can see).  But when they do, you can sign up for the promotion or not.  You do have to give your information each time you sign up for a sample.  Sometimes there will be options (in this one, you could decide which of the Pantene shampoos to sample).  It takes 3-4 weeks to get your goodies.

The only other one I've gotten was pretty cool.  It was a promotion of the then-new Maybelline FIT foundation that had a sample of every shade, so you could swatch yourself to find your right shade.

I don't know if there are ever other samples besides beauty products, as these have been the only ones since I found out about this website.  Whenever I hear about a new sample available, I'll be sure to let y'all know!

The Lincoln Lawyer.

I read this book because I've been looking forward to seeing the movie.  And I had heard good things about Michael Connelly, although this was my first one of his books that I have read.  Let me tell you-- IT. WAS. AWESOME.

Mickey Haller is a criminal defense attorney who operates out of his Lincoln Town Car.  He is always struggling to make ends meet, but gets what should be the client of his career-- a wealthy man charged with assault and attempted rape, the "franchise client."  But, as you'd imagine, things aren't smooth sailing.  Mickey was always afraid that he wouldn't recognize true innocence when he saw it, but soon realizes there's something worse that he has failed to identify-- pure evil.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who likes suspenseful books-- I'd put this in the category of a "legal thriller."
This book definitely gets an A from me.  I can't wait to read more books from Michael Connelly-- and lucky for me, there are several more about Mickey Haller.  Let me know if you read it and what you think!

TGIF-- Basketball Edition.

I don't know about y'all, but I'm so glad it's Friday.  Only a few more hours, 'til I'm home finishing The Lincoln Lawyer (which is such an amazing book) and watching the NCAA tournament.  Last night was all kinds of basketball amazing-ness.  Florida and Butler won and Duke lost.  It really doesn't get much better than that.

Derrick Williams and Kyle Singler
(This is possibly the greatest photo I've ever seen.)

I'm a little bummed that Florida and Butler will be playing each other in the next round.  I'm gonna have to go with my Gators even though it means losing this cute face.

I'll be sad to see you go, Brad.

Oh, well.  As long as Carolina is still around, I'm good.  Let's hope they still will be after tonight!

I'll be keeping y'all posted on all the bball happenings this weekend on twitter!  Let me know if you're watching too, and we can chat!

Spring = Sun.

Today's Spring Blog Challenge question from Meghan and Amber is...

What are some recommendations for products you'll be using this spring as you're headed outdoors more?

Absolutely, the number 1 thing is SUNSCREEN!  I'm as white as white can get, so I have to have tons of sunscreen every spring/summer.  I think 100+ SPF is ridiculous, when a 30 SPF blocks 97% of the sun's rays.  So, I stick with 30 on my body.  If I'm going to be out for a WHILE in the sun, then I'll bump up my face to at least a 45, as I am very easily burned.

Here's a little PSA for you-- make sure that your sunblock protects you against both UVB and UVA rays.  In the simplest terms, UVB is what burns, but UVA is what causes wrinkles/aging.  SPF only measures UVB protection.  Look for phrases like "full-spectrum" and "PA++."

Don't forget a hat for longer sun sessions.  My hair is so dense, that I don't really have a scalp-burning problem.  But I do color my hair, and I don't want the sun to destroy the color I paid good money to get!  Be warned though, that the bigger and floppier, the more likely they fly away at the beach (as I discovered last year....lol.)

A few weeks ago, I got a sample of Clinique's Self Sun.  It's been years since I tried a self-tanner, and it was not a great experience.  However, technology has come a long way in the last ten years, so I'm gonna give it another shot.

Another product that comes out in the spring is bronzer.  Since my skin is so fair, bronzer looks ridiculous in the winter, but it's a must-have once it starts to get warm.

Any tips or recommendations for spring must-have products?

Spring is in the Air.

Today, I'm linking up with Meghan and Amber's Spring Blog Challenge.  Today's question is...

Where are you/would you be headed for spring break this year (real or ideal)?

Since I'm not in school anymore, I don't have spring break these days.  :(  But, I am going to be traveling!

Around Easter, I'm (tentatively) going to Isle of Palms, SC with my friend Emily.  I had never even heard of this place before a few weeks ago.  Apparently, it's near Charleston, SC.  I don't really care where it is-- I just want to go to the beach!!

Then, in May, I'm going to Dallas, TX to visit Rachel!  I'm beyond excited!  I've never been that far west before.  I can't wait to see all the sights!

Head over to Meghan or Amber's and link up with your real or dream spring travels!!

The Joys of Home Ownership.

This weekend, I worked out in the yard with the help of my wonderful parents.  I wish I had some before pictures to show you the difference.  The yard started with leaves EVERYWHERE.  So, we raked my whole yard, cleaned the leaves/debris out of the natural areas, put down pine needles, mowed the yard and cleaned the gutters.  After several hours, it looked pretty good if I do say so myself.  :)

I love this backyard area when it's nice and clean like this.  It gets good shade so I can sit outside even in the summer and read a book.

Thankfully, the previous owner planted some flowers or else it would be a little boring back here.

Oh, and we also put this together and hung it in my bathroom.  The original cabinet was old and country-ish.  This one was my birthday present from my parents.  It looks SO MUCH better.

And I finally broke down and made a major homeowner purchase:

Yes, I will now be mowing my own yard.  I'm strangely looking forward to being able to use it.  But I'm also pretty sure that will wear off when it's 95 degrees outside.

All in all, it was a pretty productive weekend!

Today is the Day.

My Blogiversary!!

Yes, one year ago today, I began putting random thoughts out there for the whole world to read.  Or at least the other two friends I knew who had blogs plus my dad, who were my only readers for a while.  But, over the last 365 days, I've made some great friends through this blog and learned a lot.  Such as...
  • You can be closer to someone you have never "met" than to someone you see every day.
  • Not everyone will like what you have to say.  But say it anyway-- your blog is your space.
  • And there will be days when it feels like no one is listening.
  • Sometimes the most random things can inspire the best posts.
  • Some people REALLY need a grammar/spelling lesson (okay, maybe I knew that one before...)
  • There are a LOT of people who watch the Bachelor.
  • Twitter is more fun than Facebook.
  • Just keep writing.  Even when you think you've hit a wall-- keep writing.  The words will come.
Thank y'all for making the last year of my life such a blast!  I'm so thankful that I started this blog and met you ladies.  Here's to many more blogiversaries!!  :)

Happy Friday, y'all!

Woo hoo it's Friday!  I've had a huge project going on at work this month, and it's FINALLY finished.  I'm so excited!  (cue Hallelujah chorus)

This weekend is going to be great.  I mean, it's the NCAA tournament, which is awesome all by itself.  Carolina plays tonight.  Go Heels!

Plus, the Indian Wells tournament (one of my faves of the season) is wrapping up this weekend.  Not to mention that my boy, Richard Gasquet, has made it to the quarterfinals today!

And Sunday is the NASCAR race at Bristol!!  Always a guaranteed good time.  :)

I'm also planning to see The Lincoln Lawyer this weekend.  At least I was until I realized that it was based on a book.  Which means that I have to read the book first-- that's the rule.

(ps-- I really need this license plate.)

And since it's Friday, that means Five Question Friday!

1. Have you ever testified in court? For what?
Yes, I have.  In NC, if a petition is filed to have someone adjudicated incompetent, there is a Guardian ad Litem appointed to investigate and represent that person.  Then the GAL testifies at the hearing.  I've been appointed GAL a few times and had to testify.  I also appear in court almost every day, and I love it.  It's definitely the best part of my job.

2. Do you still have your wedding dress?
Well, I've never had a wedding dress to begin with.  So, no.  My mom still has hers though.  We got it out a few years ago to see how it held up, and it's still in great condition.

3. Is there a special place you like to go when you're happy, sad, stressed, etc.?
When I'm sad or stressed, I definitely want to be at home.  Preferably in bed under the covers watching some lame tv.  When I'm happy, I want to go somewhere and/or be outside in the sunshine, but no special place.

4. If you have kids, do they sleep with you? If you don't have kids...will you let your kids sleep with you when/if you have them?
I definitely will not let my children sleep with me as a routine.  Of course, if they're sick or whatever, then sure.  But there will not be a "family bed" where we all pile in together every night.

5. Do you watch late night TV?
I watch TV late at night (DVR'd shows or other shows in syndication).  But I don't usually watch late night tv (which I define as Letterman, the Tonight Show, etc.) unless someone is going to be on that I really want to see.  The only exception is that I'll watch SNL sometimes.  But even then, I typically watch it on Hulu the next week.

Slightly Obsessed?

Because I'm a crazy stalker huge fan, I've been making my way through the movies of my newest love, Andrew Garfield.  Sigh...  Fortunately for me, he's a fairly new actor, so there aren't dozens of movies that I hadn't seen before I discovered his beautiful face.  All that I have left now are Boy A (of course I have to read the book first) and Lions for Lambs.  So yeah, slightly obsessed...

Andrew Garfield - Never Let Me Go - Premiere: 54th BFI London Film Festival - Inside Arrivals

Most recently, I watched The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus.  (You may remember this as the movie that Heath Ledger died filming.)  I really wanted to like it, and I kind of did.  It was a truly unique story, and the visual effects were incredible.  But I never felt like I completely knew what was going on.  So, I didn't love it.  Although Andrew was wonderful.  :)

I also watched Never Let Me Go, a British film, after I read the book.  It also stars Carey Mulligan (who I love) and Keira Knightly (who I really don't love).  This was a great book but an even better movie, which I find rare.  99% of the time, books are better than their movie counter-parts.  My only complaint throughout the book was that I never felt emotionally invested until the very end.  The film did a better job of drawing the audience into the story.  Of course, the "twist" to the story is revealed much earlier in the movie than the book, which makes it more about the effects of the "twist" than the book, which had a more mysterious air about it.  Overall, I'd highly recommend the book AND the movie-- in that order.

Oh, and I've also knocked four movies off my 100 movies list-- The African Queen, Do the Right Thing, Bringing Up Baby, and Yankee Doodle Dandy.

Bringing Up Baby was great.  Cary Grant & Jimmy Stewart-- what's not to love??  Except Katharine Hepburn, but even she manages not to ruin this movie for me.

The African Queen was super boring, and Do the Right Thing was just a long movie about nothing until the very end.  Neither did anything for me.

Yankee Doodle Dandy wasn't very exciting, but I didn't hate it.  If you enjoy movies like White Christmas, you'll like this.  James Cagney is a guy who has a hit stage show, so a HUGE amount of the movie is watching his various shows throughout the years.

You guys seen any good movies recently that I need to watch?
