Emily's Birthday!

Last night was the birthday party for one of my BFF's Emily.  I wasn't feeling very festive after a REALLY long day at work.  So, I got a quick nap to give me some energy before getting all dolled up and heading out.

And as I anticipated, as soon as I walked in the door, I was so glad to be there.  I hadn't seen Emily, April, and Sarah in a while, so it was so great to get to catch up with them. It's the one thing (well, one of the things...) I hate about summer-- everyone is gone so much that it's impossible for our whole group to get together.

We such a blast celebrating our dear Emily's birthday.  There was a pretty good crowd of about 12 people, which made playing the "Game of Things" hilarious.  If y'all haven't played it, I highly recommend it.  Apples to Apples is still my fave party game, but this one was super fun too.

April surprised Emily with a piece of chocolate mousse cake (her favorite).

And the tradition of Emily drinking wine out of a candle holder continues...  No, I'm not kidding.  And yes, it was washed first.

And our friends Debbie and Lance brought over their 8 day old son, Knox.  Eight days old!! Y'all-- he was the cutest thing EVER.  He was born a few weeks early, so he is TINY-- less than six pounds.

He was so good and slept the entire time they were there despite the crowd getting louder as the evening wore on.  So, Emily may have gotten slightly overshadowed at her own party, but I think she was more than fine with it to hang out with this cutie.

Then sadly, I had to leave around midnight because I had to work today.  Bummer.  But all in all, it was a fantastic night.

Happy birthday, Emily!!

My List.

I've never really had a "list" of qualities my husband had to have other than he must love Jesus, make me laugh, and tolerate my sports obsession.  That's all.  I'm really not a complicated or demanding girl.  I don't need him to be 6'4" or a surgeon or have a trust fund.  But I really am going to need the man I marry to do these things (in no particular order):

Kiss me in public

Travel with me to other states just to watch a sporting event

Really want to hear my opinion

Make fun of movies with me when they are stupid

Take me to Paris

Tell me he misses me when we're apart

Vacuum the house because he knows it's my most hated chore

Listen to me and remember things I say

Give me control of the remote sometimes

Change me for the better

Be super silly with me

Calm me down and make me laugh when I get riled up over stupid stuff

Microwave chicken noodle soup for me when I'm sick

Tolerate my own personal brand of crazy

Write me love letters/notes

Kill the bugs that freak me out

Be passionate about me and protective of us

Make me feel special and loved in a million little ways

Is this really too much to ask?  I don't think so.

Dear Bar Exam Takers...

Funny Encouragement Ecard: Hopefully two miserable days of taking the bar exam results in several torturous decades of being overworked.

Good luck to you all!

If You Follow Me on the Twit.

I've seen this floating around a few places and thought I'd jump on the bandwagon.

If you follow me on Twitter, you know...

I tweet about sports.  A lot.

Speaking of which, I love the Yankees.

And, I love my Tar Heels.

I miss my friends who live far away.

Bachelorette Ashley and I have VERY different taste in men.

I might be grammar and vocabulary Nazi.

And sometimes I have violent thoughts at work.

So, I know you're all dying to follow me on twitter now.  Just click -here- to make that happen!  And if you're not on twitter, you definitely should come join the party!

My Makeup Wish List.

I've done SO WELL keeping my cosmetics purchases under control the last few months and staying under budget.  But in the mean time, all sorts of new goodies have been released that my makeup collection seriously needs.

Benefit They're Real mascara and ChaCha Tint-- If you've been around these parts for any length of time, you know how I feel about Benefit products.  I tried out both of these at the Benefit counter this week and love them.

Make Up For Ever Aqua Liners or Urban Decay 24/7 Waterproof Liquid Eyeliner-- I'm on the hunt for a new liquid liner.  I like the MAC Penultimate Liner I've been using, but I have a short attention span for cosmetics (unless the product is perfection).  I also love the wide variety of color options with these!

Urban Decay 15th Anniversary Eyeshadow Palette-- UD is absolutely my favorite brand of eyeshadows.  If I didn't have most of these (or similar) colors, I would definitely be getting this.

NARS Velvet Gloss Lip Pencil-- I love this lip gloss pencil!  It's such a unique product-- literally a lip gloss in pencil form.  And, if I remember correctly, it doesn't require a sharpener but twists up.

Bumble & Bumble Texture Hair (Un)Dressing Creme-- Not technically "cosmetics," but it's in the same budget line for me, so I'm including it here.  I've read rave reviews about this texturizing creme, and anything made by Bb. is sure to be great.

Any other products that need to be on my list??

Tell the World that I'm Coming Home.

This week is hometown date week for our Bachelorette!  First stop: Constantine’s hometown of Cumming, GA.

“Constantine was one of my favorite guys from the beginning. There’s something about Constantine that is so sexy.  There’s a real sweetness about him.  The date with Constantine in Taiwan was probably the first indication that we could actually have something... He is the total package for me.”

Constantine’s family is Greek, yet they own an Italian restaurant.  A lot of people thought this was weird.  But I’m from a city with a big Greek community, and I swear that at least 75% of the (non-chain) restaurants here are owned by Greeks, regardless of what kind of food they serve.  (Side note: If you’ve never eaten Greek food, you absolutely must.  It’s DE- LI-CIOUS.)

Constantine and Ashley arrive at his parents’ house.  In attendance is Dimitri (father), Elleni (mother), and Maria (sister).  Dimitri is so stinkin’ cute– he may be my favorite person we’ve encountered on this season of the Bachelorette.  If I was Ashley, I might pick Constantine just because of Dimitri.

Elleni pulls Ashley aside for a “Mama Question,” which is will Ashley move to Georgia for Constantine.  Ashley says of course she will.  So, Mama is happy that Ashley will “enhance [her] son’s life” by moving for him. Dimitri really likes Ashley, but tells Constantine not to rush it-- “Love takes time.”

And finally, the crowd of people I’ve been waiting for rushes in– the Greeks have arrived!!  I thought there was no way that Ashley could come to a Greek family and only meet three people.  Ha!

Constantine is officially my favorite.

Next Stop: Chadds Ford, PA with Ames.

“Ames is one of the most unique guys I’ve ever met... He has no idea just how unique he is.  I’ve never met anyone like Ames.”

In attendance at this family gathering is Serena and Randy (sister and brother in law), Jane (mother), Jim and Tracy (brother and sister in law), and some kids.

Jane tells us, “I think he’s very taken.”  A ringing endorsement if ever I've heard one.  But don't worry--Serena decides to get down to business with Ashley, who continues her refrain of “Ames is unique.”  Serena agrees that Ames is an onion.

Ames chats with his mom, who has known Ashley for all of 15 minutes yet already knows that Ashley has “tremendous character.”

Ashley's problem: “I’m still missing that spark between us.”  Danger, Will Robinson...

After his conversation with Serena, Ames decides he needs to be romantic.  So he takes Ashley to his favorite tree.  HIS FAVORITE TREE.  What in the world...  It's a little awkward, and it's pretty obvious to us all (except Ames) that, barring some disaster with Ben or JP, his time with Ashley is rapidly approaching an end.

(ps--Am I the only one who would swear that Ames is gay if they saw him out on the street??  Because I definitely get a very feminine vibe from him.)

Then onto to Sonoma, CA with Ben.

“I just love everything about Ben.  Ben is a real guy– no question.  Just physically so attractive to me.  I love that long hair, his build is great.  Just a man... Everything about him screams sexiness to me.”

Let's be real though, after a day with Ames, it really wouldn’t take much to scream sexiness in comparison...

They go to Ben’s winery to taste wines then to his house... where they sit on the porch... on a blanket.  Where is the furniture on these dates???

Then he takes her to meet his mom and sister, who apparently have only met one other girl of Ben's before Ashley.  Ben also tells his sister that it’s been more than six years since he’s cared about someone like he cares about Ashley.  I completely respect this about Ben.

Ben’s mom and sister are so great.  Ashley asks if Ben had long hair when he was young.  Mom says, “Of course not– I still had my power over him.”  Ha!  Then mom pulls out the childhood photos.  Score!  And, there’s a lot of serious talk between Ben and his mom about his father, who passed away.  Sad.

Constantine has some major competition from Ben in the “my favorite” category.
The last, and certainly not least, stop for Ashley is Roslyn, NJ, where JP is anxiously awaiting her arrival.

"But then there’s JP... I feel like I’ve known JP forever.  I’m so comfortable around JP. I feel secure; I feel relaxed.  I feel like I don’t have a care in the world.  I feel like I can do anything with him– I can be playful, I can be serious, I can be emotional, and he would be accepting of that.  With JP, everything is there– both physical and emotional.”

He takes her roller skating (with “I Can’t Fight This Feeling Anymore” playing over the PA system no less) and it’s like 7th grade all over again.  So cute and yet a little weird...  Wine in paper cups?  Classy.

JP takes Ashley home to meet Eileen (mom), Peter (dad), and Roy and Andrea (brother and his girlfriend).  His last relationship apparently ended horribly, so his family is naturally concerned about him.  His mom (a very wise woman) gets right to the point with Ashley.  “JP has only you to think about.  But you’ve had all these other men to think about.  How do you do that?  How do you pick people?” Ashley tries to reassure Eileen that JP is special.  Eileen loves that Ashley has given JP his smile back.  Aww...  Then she whips out a pic of JP with a mullet from back in the day.  Hi-larious.

Rose Ceremony-- I do not generally think Ashley is a gorgeous woman, but she looked fantastic at that rose ceremony.  I loved, loved, loved her dress!

(Thank you, Possessionista, for telling me where I can find it!  Even though I’m not gonna buy it after learning it’s $129...)

Ames is the one left standing rose-less when all the roses are gone.  Hallelujah.  Even in his exit interview, he's so bizarre.

Next stop on this international romance adventure: FIJI!!  And a surprise visitor (dun dun dun...).  Any guesses who it is??  (Don't tell me if you actually KNOW who it is.)

Today's the Day.

If you don't watch women's soccer (which I generally don't either), make today an exception.  Today is the final in the women's World Cup-- USA vs. Japan.  If the last few games are any indication, today is going to be spectacular.  And you don't want to miss it!

What a Week for TV.

This week was a great week for TV, so I'm linking up with Neely and Meagan for Boob Tube Babble today!

Boob Tube Babble

First, and most importantly, Derek Jeter got his 3,000th hit last Saturday!

Then, Monday night was, of course, the Bachelorette.  I do not understand what Ashley sees in Ames.  It drives me a little crazy that he's still around.  Dude wore BRIGHT PINK pants on their date.  What????  (ps-- this is the only pic I could find, but you can definitely see the highlighter colored pants...)

Poor Ryan really had his bubble burst by Ashley when she dumped him, but who can blame her.  He's nuts. (Side note-- what's with all the pink this week??)

Another side note: Am I the only one that thinks Ryan is channeling Parker from Friends??  Click!

And then yesterday, the Emmy nominations were announced!  I was beyond thrilled to see nominations for one of my favorite shows, Justified.  It was nominated for Best Drama, plus Timothy Olyphant and Walton Goggins each received individual nominations.  So stoked for them!!

Not to mention the long-deserved nominations for Friday Night Lights (including Kyle Chandler and Connie Britton).  Better late than never!

But, there was a GLARING oversight.  No Neil Patrick Harris!!  What the heck, Emmy voters?  Didn't you watch How I Met Your Mother this season??  Granted, it wasn't the best season for the show, but NPH was gold!

ps-- "Dad, look how fast I can run!" and "Dad, you're not looking!" are my favorite lines of this season.  Cracks me up every time.

Where I Wish I Was Right Now.

Yes, I realize it's been less than two months since my last vacation, but I'm ready for another one.  So, here are my options for vacay:

Any other suggestions?  I'm happy to take on a traveling companion as well (preferably one who can foot the bill for this little adventure, since that's the only way I'll be going anywhere...)

Oh the Followers I Will Lose...

While the entire world yesterday blew up at the Casey Anthony verdict, I applauded the jury.  Not the verdict necessarily, but their ability to follow the law and the jury instructions in the face of the outrage that they knew would come.

For the record, let me say that I didn't watch a single minute of testimony or hear a word of the opening statements and closing arguments.  What I did catch was the media frenzy for the past six weeks and legal commentators swearing that there was no way that she was going to be found not guilty.  Not to mention the constant barrage against her attorney who has virtually no experience. (Sidenote: I've been practicing as long as Baez has, and there's no way in the world I'd be prepared to handle that defense.)

As a criminal defense attorney myself, I've seen clients get convicted of things that I knew they didn't do and clients get off for crimes that I knew they committed.  It's the way the system works.  It's at the same time the most frustrating thing about it and the beauty of it.

The purpose of the jury is to judge whether or not the prosecution has proved its case beyond a reasonable doubt.  Its job is NOT to provide "justice" for the victim.

The words "beyond a reasonable doubt" tend to get lost in the rhetoric, but they are the most important words in this whole process.  It makes me shudder to imagine a court where the standard of proof that the state has to prove is anything less than "reasonable doubt."  I say it every time I'm in front of a jury or judge-- the "reasonable doubt" standard is the highest standard in American jurisprudence.  And it's that way by design.  We absolutely should not tolerate the state having the authority to imprison (not to mention end the life of) a defendant without proving their case to such a standard.  To lower that standard and find Casey guilty because the public and media "knew" she committed the crime would have been cowardly of those jurors and a miscarriage of justice.

"No person shall be held to answer for a capital, or otherwise infamous crime... nor be deprived of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law." -- U.S. Constitution, Fifth Amendment

Mid-Year Status Report.

Holy cow, it's July.  The year is halfway over!  How did that happen??

2011 began with a night out with Emily and April.  I always have fun with these two, but that night was particularly delightful.

January also began a new season of the Bachelor!!  You can read all my thoughts on it here, if you so desire.  It was a pretty exciting season with Crazy Eyes Michelle.

I also discovered Gladys on The Ellen Show.  Check it-- I Love Jesus, But I Drink A Little.

I set out to watch all ten Oscar Best Picture nominees.

In February, I managed to watch all the remaining Oscar movies.  Loved some, hated some.  (And I still believe Andrew Garfield was robbed of his Supporting Actor nomination.)

It was also the UNC-Duke game, aka the greatest sporting event of the year.

And my friend Rebekah and I celebrated our Christmas-time birthdays with a weekend in Charlotte.

March was my one year blogiversary!  I hit 100 followers and therefore hosted my first giveaway.

I also bought my very own lawnmower and planned my spring vacations to the beach and to Dallas.

March brought basketball season to a close for my boys, but they had a fantastic season.

North Carolina Duke

In April, I discussed my top five music memories and revealed my love for Marshall Erickson.

I also bared my naked face to the world and reminded myself why I love living alone.

April was also April's birthday!  And the royal wedding, which reminded us all that people will buy anything.

May brought Mother's Day, which I spent with my mom, grandmother, and aunt.

It also brought my first Tuesday Tunes post with two of my fave songs of the spring.

The Bachelorette (which technically started in May), got into high gear in June with some real crazies.  And some nice guys, but mostly weirdos.

June always means lots of baseball.

Oh, and I went shopping.

And that brings us to July!
