Adios, Diet Coke.

I've gone to a Southern Baptist church my whole life, so I've never really done the Lent thing.  But this year, I am participating.  There are a few reasons I've decided to do so:

  1. I feel like my relationship with Christ has kind of taken a back seat recently, and I want to do something intentional to make me focus on Him.
  2. I need to cultivate some more self-control in my life, and making myself accountable to God for these things is a great way to keep myself on track.
  3. And, I'm giving up things that need to get away from anyway.
So, I'm giving up all soda (Diet Coke being the primary culprit) and sugar (except wedding cake tastings that are scheduled during Donny's trip here in March).  Y'all-- these are going to be super hard.  But, by focusing on the spiritual aspect of the sacrifice, I know I can handle it.  Plus, by giving up things that are huge parts of my routine, I will be constantly reminded to focus my life on Christ-- which is obviously the whole point of Lent in the first place.

What about you guys-- are you giving up anything for Lent?

  2. I'm also Southern Baptist, so I've never actually participated in lent. But honestly, pregnancy has made me give up most of the fun stuff- booze, sugar, caffeine...

  3. I'm a Southern Baptist too but I've always participated in Lent. I think it's because when I was growing up 2 of my closest friends were Catholic and I didn't want to be left out. Now I do it because as an adult I recognize the sacrifice for what it is and it helps me grow as a Christian :) Glad you're partaking!

  7. I gave up fried food. It's definitely going to be a long 40 days for me, but it'll be worth it.

  8. this sounds awesome! I stopped practicing Lent after I accepted Christ and unofficially left the Catholic church. I think it's great what you're doing. I have no issues with Lent, I just know for me now it's not the thing. Maybe some day!

  9. Good for you! The Diet Coke thing confuses me - I think it is gross! Haha! Last year I gave up french fries which I LOVE! This year I think I might try to go to church more (or at all since I never go) or do something good for someone but still trying to figure out what would mean the most!

  10. I like this idea! I have given up lots of things for Lent with much success. In the Orthodox church, we basically go vegan the entire time and that's really hard but really worth it. I haven't been so strong with that lately, so I am going to try the sugar thing once my girl scout cookies run out. LOL

  13. I'm already giving up a lot being pregnant and having gestational diabetes. So that's what I'm counting because, seriously, if I gave up anything else I'd have nothing to eat! =P I suppose I could give up Twitter or something, but........ ;-)
