Fun With Flying.

Before last May, it had been more than five years since I had been on a plane. Since last May, I've flown five times.  Ah, the difference a long-distance relationship makes.

Since travel season is upon us, I thought I'd share some of the things I've learned this past year!

I make a packing LIST for every trip I take.  Clothes, toiletries, makeup, and random items all go on the list. Even if I think there's no way I'll forget it, it goes on the list.  Then, as I pack, I cross them off.  Oddly enough, even with said list, I forget something EVERY. SINGLE. TIME. I go to Texas.  Usually, it's makeup because I pack the night before and use my makeup in the morning.  So, make sure to check your list before you leave, not just after you pack!  :)

I like to make my own, but this one is pretty good.

My favorite thing about Southwest is that I can check a bag for free, so I can take all my regular toiletries (not just the travel size ones).  I knew to put them all in plastic baggies, but that only contains SPILLS.  Use pieces of saran wrap under the screw top to help stop spills before they happen.

My most important tip is not to OVERPACK.  I always do, but as I've traveled, I've figured out more and more what I'll actually use and what I won't.  If it's just a weekend, you can probably get by with only one pair of jeans, and you won't need four or five pairs of shoes.  The key I've discovered is to plan your outfits in advance and stick with it.  Rolling clothes in groups instead of folding them individually will also save a ton of room.

Oh, and if you plan on buying SOUVENIRS and stuff at your destination, don't forget to leave room in your suitcase!

Invest in a LUGGAGE SCALE.  They're cheap (less than $15 usually) and will save you hassle.  Yes, I've been that girl whose bag was 5lbs over the limit and had to shove stuff from my suitcase into my carry on curbside.  Trust me, you don't want to be that girl...
The more I travel, the less I want to CARRY ON with me.  If I could get away with just an iPod and a book, that would be awesome.  But, there are some things I refuse to let out of my possession-- laptop, charger, iPhone charger, and makeup.  I usually also keep a jacket or sweater with me.  Some flights are cold, others are really warm.  But I try to keep it down to the bare minimum so I don't have to lug a heavy bag around the terminal.

Any other good travel tips or suggestions??

  1. I always forget something too. Last summer it was makeup on two different weekend trips! I always pack last minute and never make a list. You are very organized. Will you pack for my trip to Ireland!?

  2. I was the same way - I didn't fly much until I was dating/engaged to my now husband! I'm a chronic overpacker, but I'm working on reforming.

  3. Those are definitely great suggestions! I love lists, too! Pajamas are somehow one of my most commonly forgotten items, though...

  4. I travel ALOT and I love Southwest. And packing lists. I've pinned several on Pinterest lately. : ] And I do not enjoy having to use small toilettries when I can't fly SW.

  5. Love this Katie! So helpful :)
